Parent Typing Letter
September 2009
Dear Parents & Students in CTS 8 & 9:
Keyboarding practice has begun! CTS 8 & 9 students are required to do home keyboarding practice for 15 minutes, 3 nights a week resulting in a total of 180 minutes (3 hours) a month (with the exception of September in which students are only expected to complete 135 minutes). For keyboarding practice, students can count typing out their notes from subject classes as well as doing straight copying from any textbook. Typing emails is an acceptable method of working towards the 3 hours per month but msn messenger is not as students often use many short hand abbreviations and symbols instead of full words.
Your child has received the September keyboarding practice sheet and if he or she loses it they can retrieve a new one from the grade 8 or 9 Wiki. At the end of the month when home practice sheets are due, your comments regarding your child’s effort & your signature will be required. Thank-you for taking your time to add your reflections as seen throughout that month.
A few times each month, we’ll check our speed and accuracy using a typing website www.typingtest.com Please have your child show you this site, and have them demonstrate how we do our 3 minute typing tests. There are practice tests available to use for free.
Thank-you very much for your assistance in our keyboarding program.
Sincerely,
Mr. Henry Schellenberg

Course Description for both CTS 9 streams:
This advanced level course is designed for grade 9 students who took CTS 8 course. The overall goal of this course is for students to link theory and practice performed in a ‘school setting and environment’ to their real-life and potential work related situations.
Course Goals for all CTS 9 students:
All students will be given the opportunity to combine theory & practice through the following:
- Cement their touch-typing keyboarding skills;
- Research & report on trends in technological issues in order to better promote the link between theory and practice in real contexts;
- Further develop their spreadsheet skills using Excel 2007;
-
- Further develop word processing skills using Word 2007;
- Publisher 2007, a desktop publishing software, so that they can identify differences between desktop publishing and word processing;
- Further develop their multimedia skills using PowerPoint 2007 and Windows Movie Maker v2 and know the potential ‘magnitude’ of each;
